Although Captain Crunch is owned by the US, he sure has a lot of Canadians cheering him on every time he races. That’s because he’s paired with the Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society, along with former major league pitcher Dan Plesac, in the ongoing Breeders Crown Charity Challenge.
OSAS supporters are encouraged to vote every day for Team Plesac and Captain Crunch and the winner will be announced at the end of October when the Breeders Crown races are featured at Mohawk.
Today, in the $285,362 Cane Pace on the undercard of the Hambletonian at the Meadowlands, Captain Crunch received a beautiful two hole trip behind Bettors Wish. With Scott Zeron steering as usual, Captain Crunch watched his arch rival click off splits of :26.2, :54.4 and 1:22. Zeron pulled on the right line as they rolled out of the final turn and Captain Crunch overtook the pacesetter in deep stretch to win in 1:48 flat. Bettors Wish was a tough neck back in second with Semi Tough third.
It was the fifth win in seven starts this year for the three-year-old son of Captaintreacherous owned by the Three Brothers Stables, Christina Takter, Rojan Stables and Caviart Farms. He is trained by Takter’s daughter Nancy Johansson.
In the main event of the day there was more cheering north of the border as top Canadian driver Bob McClure won his first Hambo with a heads up steer behind Forbidden Trade winning over stablemates and favoured Greenshoe and Gimpanzee. Luc Blais trains for Serge Godin’s Determination Stable of Montreal, Quebec.
It was the first Hambo win for Forbidden Trade’s sire, Kadabra, the leading trotting sire in Canada for many years who stands at Tara Hills Stud in Port Perry.
