Iron tough trotter Hemi Seelster was entrusted to the Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society last summer. The now 11 year-old son of Holiday Road was given some time to decompress from his racing career which spanned nine years, 16 racetracks across North America and 11 different trainers.
Hemi entered training for his second career as a riding horse at the foster farm owned by Susan and Bert Mollica at the end of January. Hemi has quickly taken to his new trainer, Bert and despite being a bit apprehensive about having a rider rather than a driver, Hemi is adapting well.
“Bert is really happy with Hemi, he is going slow with him as he’s a bit nervous but Hemi really likes Bert, they spend lots of time bonding and Hemi is getting extra loving from Bert,” reports Susan.
Bred by Seelster Farms, Hemi Seelster was purchased as a yearling by John Bax for $19,000 and Hemi would give the celebrated horseman one of the biggest thrills in his career in June of 2015 when he won the $233,000 Goodtimes final at Mohawk. The race is named in honour of Bax’s iconic horse, Goodtimes, a member of the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame and one of the best trotters ever bred in Canada.
In total Hemi made 175 lifetime starts over a nine year career which started as a two-year-old in 2014 and concluded last year at age 10. He banked just over $850,000 and took his mark of 1:51.4 as a seven-year-old. He will continue his lessons with his new buddy Bert until finding a forever adoptive family.
