Bulldog Hanover, the horse who “put the sport on his shoulders this year” with an absolutely incredible 2022 campaign, concluded his Canadian career with a resounding victory in the last of eight Breeders Crown finals at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday, October 29. His time of 1:46.4 represented a Breeders Crown record and tied the track and Canadian record.
In addition to becoming the most talked about harness horse of the season thanks to his on track exploits, Bulldog Hanover spent the first few months of 2022 doing double duty as a stallion standing at Seelster Farms. The Ontario-sired son of Shadow Play, driven by Dexter Dunn, was notching his 13th win in 15 starts this year for $1.6 million in earnings.
Bred by Hanover Shoe Farms, Bulldog became the fastest harness horse of all time with a 1:45.4 mile at the Meadowlands in the Haughton Final. That came in the middle of an 11 race winning streak.
Jack Darling trains and co-owns the very popular pacer with Brad Grant. Elected to the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame this year, Darling has trained and owned many top horses over the years but this was his first Breeders Crown champion.
Jack and Brad have both been long time supporters of OSAS. Last year Brad entrusted a very special horse to OSAS’s care, millionaire Easy Lover Hanover. The son of Somebeachsomewhere didn’t last long at OSAS as he was quickly adopted by Northumbria Equine near Port Hope where he is now known as Philip.
"You know he's retiring in great shape, he looks as good as he did when I bought him. Good, sound horse and thanks to Joanne Colville and the group at OSAS they have a couple of people lined up and he'll be in the right spot being the classy old horse that he is. It's an end of a good story,” Brad said at the time.
In 2007 Darling organized the largest fundraiser for OSAS in the organization’s history. The roast featured many of the industry’s heavyweights and a very successful silent auction. Hosted by Western Fair District, the event raised well in excess of $100,000 largely thanks to Jack’s efforts.
Everyone associated with OSAS congratulates Brad, John and Bulldog for their incredible success to date and wish them the best of luck in the horse’s final two starts at Rosecroft Raceway and The Meadowlands next month.
